Warship Technologies
Design and construction of a warship is a specialised field requiring a vast database, analytical capability and specialised infrastructural facilities to meet challenges of the marine environment for which selection of right material is another critical area. The integration of equipment, systems and materials is the most difficult task. DRDO is engaged in developing state-of-the-art warship technology to meet the construction plan of the Navy. Many techniques and systems have been developed and are in use. Special facilities have been created and certain facilities are in the pipeline to make the country self-sufficient in designing warships and submarines. A few notable facilities and systems developed are outlined here.
Health Monitoring System
To reduce the down time of onboard equipment, it is essential to monitor the health of equipment so as to predict failures and to take precautionary measure. An online health monitoring system has been developed using FFT on the signals picked up from vibration sensors placed at different points on machines. The absolute level of vibration indicates the health, and trend analysis helps in the prediction of failures. This system is operational onboard naval ships.
Training Simulators
For proper training of ship's crew, simulators .are the most cost-effective option. A user-friendly machinery control simulator has been designed, which is operational at the training establishment of the Navy. This software-based simulator has enhanced the training effectiveness to a great extent.
Signature Management
The most critical parameters for ship design is self noise. It is a
continuous endeavour to
reduce the self noise of the ship by
isolating vibration and noise of various equipment and machinery from the ship structure.
This is tackled by designing suitable isolations. However, the design of isolators
requires a vast database on noise signatures and their analysis. Necessary facilities and
expertise have been set up to record and analyse ship's self noise and to design suitable
isolation mounts and enclosures. It is a continuous research process to develop new
techniques to reduce self noise of naval platforms and DRDO has made a significant
contribution in this field.
