DEPARTMENT OF DEFENCE PRODUCTION & SUPPLIES
The Department of Defence Production was established under the Ministry of Defence in 1962 with an objective of developing an integrated and indigenous base for production of defence hardware. The first defence production unit, the Gun Carriage Factory which was established in 1808 was brought under the Department . Again, a new Department of Defence Supplies was set up in 1965 for mobilising the capabilities available in the civil sector to supplement the efforts of the Defence Production units under the Department. These two departments were merged in 1981 to continue as the Department of Defence Production and Supplies (DP&S).
The primary objective and responsibility of this Department, is to equip the Armed Forces with latest equipment and weaponary systems and help in modernising them to keep pace with the technological advances. There are 38 factories/public sector units under this Department producing various defence equipment and stores. There are also five organisations under the Department which provide testing, certification, quality control and standardisation of various items produced by the production units, besides participating in organising exhibitions of items produced.
