| The Directorate of Life Sciences (DLS) earlier called Directorate of Agriculture and Life Sciences (DALS) came into being on 31st July 2000 on merging of erstwhile Directorate of Biomedical and Allied Sciences (DBAS) and Directorate of Food & Agricultural Sciences (DFAS). The Directorate was renamed as Directorate of Life Sciences on 17th May 2001.

The Directorate has two groups as follows:
I. Biomedical:- This comprises nuclear medicine, disease diagnostics and management, physiology, bioengineering and psychology.
II. Food & Agriculture:- This encompasses food science & technology, high altitude & cold desert agriculture.
The Directorate co-ordinates and facilitates the research and development activities of the following laboratories/institutions:
- Defence Agricultural Research Laboratory (DARL), Pithoragarh
- Defence Bioengineering and Electromedical Lab (DEBEL), Bangalore
- Defence Food Research Laboratory (DFRL), Mysore
- Defence Institute of Physiology and Allied Sciences (DIPAS), Delhi
- Defence Institute of Psychological Research (DIPR), Delhi
- Defence Research & Development Establishment (DRDE), Gwalior
- Defence Research Laboratory (DRL), Tezpur
- Field Research Laboratory (FRL), Leh
- Institute of Nuclear Medicine and Allied Sciences (INMAS), Delhi
- High Altitude Medical Research Center (HAMRC), Leh
- Armed Forces Medical Research Council (AFMRC) Projects of the
Directorate General Armed Forces Medical Services (DGAFMS)

| This Directorate reports to the Chief Controller, Research & Development (Life Sciences & Human Resources). The Directorate serves as an interface between the Laboratories, Services Headquarters, Ministries of the Government, Inter-Service Organisations, Public and Private Sector Undertakings. It also promotes cooperation, both at national and international level, in its assigned sphere of activities.
