| The origin of Directorate of Combat Vehicles dates back to Aug 1947. It was then called Controller of Development (Vehicles). In Jan 1957, it was placed under the control of Directorate General of Inspection and was named Directorate of Vehicles. The Directorate came under the umbrella of R&D Organisation in Aug 1965. Its name was changed to Directorate of Combat Vehicles in Oct 1980. In Jul 2001, Dte of Engineering was merged with this Dte and consequently, the Directorate is now known as Directorate of Combat Vehicles and Engineering.
