BACKGROUND

The Naval Research Board (NRB) was set up in September 1996 to provide flexible approach to basic research through funding leading to the development of new techniques, design tools and high quality technical manpower in the fields related to the Naval environment. The Board has launched a Grants-in-Aid scheme to nurture research talent and create research facilities in IITs, universities and other research centres including industries in the country for promoting basic research in Naval science and technology. The scheme is coordinated through the following panels:

  • Materials (including Composite and Stealth)
  • Hydrodynamics (including Propulsion)
  • Sonar and Signal Behaviour
  • Ocean Environment
  • Scientific Computing

OBJECTIVES & FUNCTIONS

  • Enhancement of the knowledge base leading to the exploitation of the sea for military purposes

  • Establishing potential application of a new or inadequately understood scientific principle

  • Generation of knowledge by focussing on phenomena or observations which are not understood

  • Generation of expertise for exploiting technology in various disciplines related to the Naval environment

  • Generation of new knowledge potentially useful to the Navy and to train young minds to generate and apply that knowledge for Naval purposes

  • Formulating principles and practices to strengthen interaction of DRDO with academic institutions

FACILITIES AVAILABLE

Apart from the existing infrastructural facilities available in NSTL, NMRL, NPOL, DRDO has facilities at Underwater Ranges, Goa which are fully operational ranges for the measurement of magnetic and acoustic signature of ships to obtain the best possible acoustic silencing and magnetic cleansing.

SUBMISSION OF PROJECT PROPOSALS

Faculty of universities and colleges, researchers/scientists from non- profit and R&D institutions from public and private sectors can submit proposals through their institutions. Researchers without affiliations to any institution, and also commercial organisations with infrastructure and expertise may also submit proposals.

  • Project proposals should be submitted to the concerned Panels in the prescribed format.

  • Project applications will be assessed and sanctioned twice, 01 May and 01 November, in a year.

  • Panel wise research areas are suggested for those who wish to submit proposals.
